Amaranthus Caudatus: Harvesting & Tasting Amaranth Seeds | Love Lies Bleeding Amaranth
Amaranthus caudatus - Love Lies Bleeding amaranth seeds today we'll try to harvest them, cook them, and do a little comparative taste testing. All right, so these are the cut-and-dried panicles from our love lies bleeding Amaranthus Caudatus Amaranth and i'm going to remove the flowers from the panicles because the flowers contain a seed and that seed is a pseudo cereal that is edible in this incarnation they kind of look like squids tentacles are like I'm fiddling with an old man's dreadlocks it's kind of disturbing but YUM so what I ended up doing was stripping the panicles down to the stem.
And now I'm going to whiz these in a blender separating the light flower parts from the seed is as easy as using the wind your mouth wind is blowing and then the light flower parts come flying out like confetti in a ticker-tape parade amaranth is not only a seed crop but a leaf vegetable that's been cultivated for thousands of years in the Americas in amaranth's history is as bloody as it is interesting for more information on amaranth check out my article I'll put a link to it below it goes through medicinal uses fulcrum ADIZ pharmacological effects etymology history and all that fun stuff so yeah check that out if you're into it all right so I'll just pull those little twigs out of there and we should be good cool all right so two plants yielded about a cup of seeds we're going to take these seeds cook them and cook these these are store-bought compare the two and hopefully we'll do this you know before maybe wakes up one part amaranth one to three parts water one part amaranth one to three parts water cover them both said it said it let's go!
Okay so it's time to taste the difference between the two here we have our store-bought amaranth it's sat on the stove a little bit because my little one got up smells I hate to say this but it smells like amaranth it has this smell to it that one's like the texture on this stuff is good seats are nice and big I could see visually that they're bigger than the seeds on the amaranth that we grew in a box garden um the taste is well I don't know let's see if it's comparable to the other this one here is the amaranth weaker in the garden see they're a little bit reddish kind of visually appealing at least here the carriage is kind of a stronger flavor it's good though em rant has a sort of I don't know as far as plants are concerned game unis to it but it's definitely an acquired taste and it's easy to acquire the flavor is very nice and much better than oatmeal but yeah this was fun to harvest and fun to grow and as you see from the picture in the beginning those are the plants that I actually got are amaranth seeds off of there beautiful in the garden except for when I was anyway they're kind of funny-looking once you get them off the plant but yeah this is a totally fun project a great plant to grow didn't require a whole lot of water degree in a box so yeah on to the next I I feel weird saying this but like yeah I won't if you have any experience with amaranth please leave your comments stories or questions below to learn more about amaranth check out my article in the link I have it stay tuned while I find out what amaranth tea is like how to harvest piñon nuts and we'll see how this goes if you like comment subscribe that'd be awesome if you dislike I will find you have a nice day playing people [Music]
